Dear Friend ,

Spring is just around the corner and so are new cultural events that you can look forward to!

Already the upcoming weekend is going to bring two significant events. The first one is the annual Museum Night (Museumnacht010) which will take place on Saturday 7 March in many institutions all around Rotterdam. One of the participating venues is also Goethe-Institut which is preparing, in collaboration with the Czech Centre, an exhibition called European Breakup. We are supporting two artists in presenting their works during this evening - Kateřina Konarovská and Luis Maly, who both took part in our exhibiton Through the Walls last November.

The second event of this week will happen in Amsterdam on the occasion of the International Women's Day on Sunday 8 March. Together with Instituto Cervantes Utrecht, OBA Amsterdam, EUNIC Global and other institutions, we will be co-hosting a debate on the role of women in the world of science. We have invited Markéta Baňková, an award-winning Czech writer focusing on scientific themes which she "translates" to general public through fictional stories, who will participate in the discussion with other international (female) artists.

The 28th March is celebrated in the Czech Republic as the National Day of Teachers. On the same day, Comeniusdag is celebrated in the Netherlands. Both festivities are related to the birthday of Jan Ámos Komenský, the so-called “teacher of the nations”. This year’s festivities are going to be special as the year 2020 marks the 350th anniversary of Comenius’ death and burial in Naarden. Many international guests will come to Naarden not only to commemorate Comenius' legacy, but also to see the opening of a new exhibition Mundo Comenii (The World of Comenius). On this occasion, Comenius Prize will be awarded to Tomáš Halík.

In addition, one of the world's beloved string ensembles will perform in Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam on Sunday 8 March. The Pražák Quartet will play Mozart, with guest violist Dana Zemtsov joining them for Bruckner's extraordinary String Quintet. If you like chamber music, this is the place to go.

Last but not least, we have an art tip for you. In Centraal Museum Utrecht you can currently visit an exhibition The Tears of Eros (De tranen van Eros) which focuses on female surrealism and it features two significant Czech artists - Toyen and Jindřich Štýrský!
