Newsletter: January 2020

Dear Friend ,

Hopefully, you've got enough rest during Christmas because there is no time to idle, the new season starts right away. Time to go and get your agenda.

The biggest European showcase music festival Eurosonic Noorderslag will take place in Groningen between 15 - 18 January. This year's focus is directed at Switzerland, nevertheless, you can still look forward to Czech representatives. The up-and-coming singer Viah, a winner of the music exporting project Czeching 2019, will perform on 16 January. The day after, you'll get to hear a dream pop/indie-folk duo teepee and a fast-rising electronic duo Bratři.
Furthermore, get ready for IFFR 2020, perhaps the biggest Dutch film event of the year, which will open in Rotterdam on 22 January and will last until 2 February. As usual, there are also Czech movies to be found in the program selection. The festival will screen Karel Vachek's Communism and the Net or The End of Representative Democracy and the director himself is going to present this incredible 335 minutes long documentary. Another film selected is Cook F**k Kill, an absurd drama by Mira Fornay. And on top of that, there will be two documentaries in Deep Focus section. The Alchemical Furnace by Adam Ol'ha and Jan Daňhel focuses on film making methods of Jan Švankmajer. The other one is The Vasulka Effect from Icelandic-Swedish-Czech copruduction, which portrays the life and work of pioneers of video art Steina and Woody Vasulka.
In addition, until the end of February you can still watch Ivan Passer's film Intimní osvětlení in Dutch cinemas.
On 31 January you are welcome to visit in Amsterdam an official opening of StartPoint Prize, a talent show which is dedicated to European art school graduates and which introduces the most outstanding emerging artistic generation. It is our pleasure to annually support presence of Czech artists and curators at this exhibition.
There are another two art shows coming to an end in January, however, you might still get to see them. Firstly, the exhibition On the Road, which presents jewelery made by the head of the Atelier K.O.V. UMPRUM Eva Eisler and alumni of this studio, is on view until 8 January in Nijmegen.
Secondly, Joey Ramone Gallery in Rotterdam is currently hosting David Možný, represented by NEVAN CONTEMPO (Prague), whose exhibition Together We Stay * Divided We Fall stays until 11 January.
And finally, we want to thank you for your support and the ongoing interest in our activities. We wish you the best of luck in 2020 and we are looking forward to seeing you soon at one of the upcoming events.
